@careful - I will be sure to post something as soon as we can meet. I'm busy with school, so it might be a week or two. At any rate, I'll update when I can.

I just received an email from a friend inviting me to lunch so she could tell me about the "historic and exciting new information" that she heard at the annual meeting.
Anyone know what I can expect to hear? I just want to be prepared.
I understand there are two book releases, but what could possibly be so exciting that she would want to come straight home and set up lunch to tell me?
I can't imagine it's the KON identity...

Does it strike anyone else odd that on the tax return, they claim to have no control or income in foreign countries? We KNOW that isn't true.

Is it clergy privilege?
by StarTrekAngel injust wanted to pose the question to the group and see what the general opinion is vs what the wt may have claimed in other cases.. we all know that they have argued over clergy privilege when elder learn of a crime but keep quiet about it.
regardless of what one may feel about this, lets assume for a minute that they are correct.. all elders are directed to contact the branch when they learn of a case of child abuse.
would the conversation between the elder and the branch be considered under the "clergy privilege"?

Sparrow,
I think the admittance of guilt even after an accusation is a confession and protected. A confession is the unburdening of a transgression or wrongdoing. There is no condition about when the information is confessed. This is privileged information.
A child reporting abuse is approaching the adult authority figures in their lives for assistance and protection. This is not privileged information.
I don't understand how regular adults can sleep at night knowing that a child has been abused and feel no responsibility to report it to the police no matter their standing as a mandatory reporter. We should all consider ourselves mandatory reporters when it comes to children, or vulnerable others.

NWT 1984 vs NWT 2013
by Tallon ini recently had a discussion with a jw concerning a change in wording of a scripture - in fact this was my all time favourite scripture, namely, micah 6:8.. my view is that the wtbts have deliberately changed the wording and meaning of the said scripture.
the other person is of the opinion that that is not the case.
micah 6:8.

What was the original word used in that case? The only way to know is to look it up: Here is a link to a list of various versions Bible Gateway

I watched video 1 and 4 - do they mention anywhere having a line item for legal costs and/or settlements??
Where is the money going ? Is a good question. Although I'm assuming a lot of it is going for sex abuse cases, that doesn't fully explain all of it. As it stands now, with all the cuts in production, staffing and other items people are right to assume that the needs are not as much now as in the past. They look bad begging all the time.
They would probably do better if they just came clean said we screwed up how we handled sex abuse and we've had to settle X amount of cases for X amount of dollars - like all the other churches do. People could get their mind around that and would probably pony up the bucks to fix it.

Religious Discrimination; now LEGAL
by lastmanstanding innewsflash.
there are businesses that are now discriminating in their hiring practices based on the fact that you are a jw.. sure, you think i'm mad.
but it's true.. the business circles have become acutely aware of the -not even 1 year old- decision in the industrial court where a jw ratted out a fellow jw and brought disrepute to the bank where they both worked.

This is not about religious discrimination - it is about ethics. If people can't follow the ethics of their profession, they are unqualified and should not be employed.

This is a particularly interesting sentence:
If the one under suspicion had, in effect, resigned from being a member, not having attended any meetings for some time and not identifying herself as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses, they might choose to let the matter rest until such time as she did begin to identify herself again as a Witness.
Faders are considered resigned but not disassociated or disfellowshipped. Sort of an unofficial third option.

couple of comments:
1) Where did the "Witness of Jehovah" cartoon come from? I'd never seen this before.
2) Going to HQ was a little overdone. What large organization could you go to, and drop in on the CEO or someone from the Board of Directors without an appointment of some kind??
3) I think Romy is a little too whiny at the begnning - it would have been more powerful to simply state what the doctrine or rules and let people draw their own conclusions.
4) The Anderson's were excellent!!
5) The posted JW Child Abuse Policy contains some items that are new, and perhaps even only recently instigated. I wish there had been more discussion on how the policy has developed.
